QS World University Rankings released this year’s results. For Asia, more varsities from Hong Kong are in the top ten and Singapore continues to maintain its leadership. Let’s begin…

10. Pohang University of Science & Technology

8. Seoul National University

From the Start of the New Nation Korean people have always maintained their faith in the power of education, even through colonial occupation and war during the tumultuous first half of the 20th century. Thus in 1946, just months after Korea regained its independence, Seoul National University was established as the first piece of the educational foundation for the new nation. After a few short years, the campus had to be abandoned at the start of the Korean war in 1950, as civilians fled south to escape the frontlines. But the passion of the professors and students sustained the school through the war, with classes held outside refugee camps.

7. Peking University

Peking University is a comprehensive and National key university. The campus, known as “Yan Yuan”-- the gardens of Yan, is situated at the northeast of the Haidian District at the western suburbs of Beijing. It stands near the Yuan Ming Gardens and the Summer Palace. The University consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments, with 93 specialties for undergraduates, 2 specialties for the second Bachelor’s degree, 199 specialties for Master candidates and 173 specialties for Doctoral candidates.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong, being established in the Hong Kong Island. It is originated from the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese which is the first faculty of HKU as well. HKU has consistently been ranked as one of the best universities in Asia. The QS World University Rankings places it as 1st in Asia and 22nd in the world. The medium of instruction in most classes is English and the school adopts the problem-based learning teaching strategy which aims to train students’ problem solving skills.

The National University of Singapore is Singapore’s oldest university. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered. NUS has a semester-based modular system for conducting courses. It adopts features of the British system. Other cross-disciplinary initiatives study programmes include double-degree undergraduate degrees in Arts & Social Sciences and Engineering; Arts & Social Sciences and Law; Business and Engineering; and Business and Law.
